ILMEA

General Information

Over 60 schools from the North-Northwest suburbs participate in the ILMEA District VII Music Festival. Every year select students may audition in early October to participate in the elite ILMEA Orchestra at the Festival in early November.

The ILMEA website can be found at ilmea.org/districts/district7/junior-orchestra.

Audition

Auditions are open to middle school students in grades 6-8 who are members of their school orchestra program. Auditions are held on a weekday at sometime between (4:00 – 8:00) at a local participating middle school. Students must attend the entire audition evening in order to be eligible. Parents need to provide transportation to and from the audition site. There is a $8.00 audition fee that will be collected near the audition date.

Students are expected to prepare the audition music towards perfection. Students that are accepted into the honors orchestra are the best of the best. A few after school rehearsals will be scheduled prior to the audition, however, most of the work will rest on the student to learn the music. Get your private teachers to help! You will be rated on pitch/intonation, rhythm, bowing, tone, and expression (dynamics, vibrato, etc.).

The audition itself is a worth-while experience for all orchestra students. It is a lot of fun to play this relatively difficult music along with the best string players in our area. Students also have the opportunity to work with a guest conductor at the night of the audition.

Sign-Up Deadline

The deadline for students to sign up for the Audition is typically in mid-September. Be sure to let Mr. Broach know that you plan to participate at the beginning of the school year by September 1.
